This document defines terms applied in the field of rolling bearings and their technology.
This document includes terms related to all types of rolling bearings wherein the principal degree of freedom is continuous rotation around an axis enabled by an ordered set of rolling elements between two circular raceways such that loads can be transmitted between them in a particular range of either radial or axial directions, or both. This document also includes accessories to these products.
The following types of terms are not included:
— terms specified in ISO 76, ISO 281 and ISO 1132-1;
— terms which are narrowly applied in only one specialized rolling bearing International Standard.

This document provides information on gear tooth wear and damage. The material contained herein is intended to help the user better understand damage to gear teeth, but the potential reasons for damage and preventive measures discussed are not definitive. Also, for individual cases, other reasons for damage or measures can exist that are not mentioned in this document. At the same time, reasons for damage or measures mentioned in this document are not always of importance. In many cases, damage can be the result of multiple interacting factors. Some causes that are included are still a topic of research and discussion but are presented with the intent to provide possibilities. The solution to many gear problems involves detailed investigation and analysis by specialists; this document is not intended to replace such expert knowledge.

This document establishes the means to achieve an electronic representation of rolling bearing data by providing a reference dictionary needed to describe various data about rolling bearings together with their descriptive properties and domains of values in various International Standards relevant to rolling bearings. This document is intended to facilitate the use, manipulation and exchange of rolling bearing data, for example, manufacturing, distribution and usage. This document specifies a reference dictionary that contains: — a definition of a general class of bearings intended to be further extended by reference dictionaries specifying bearings in other International Standards; — definitions and identifications of the classes of rolling bearings as they are described in the various International Standards relevant to rolling bearings, with associated classification scheme; — definitions and identifications of data element types that represent properties of rolling bearings; — definitions and identifications of domains of values that prove useful for describing the above-mentioned data element types. Each class, property or domain of values of this application domain constitutes an entry of the reference dictionary defined in this document. It is associated with a computer-sensible and a human-readable definition, and with a computer-sensible identification. Identification of a dictionary entry allows for unambiguous reference from any application. Definitions and identifications of dictionary entries are defined by means of standard data, which consist of instances of the EXPRESS entity data types defined in the common dictionary schema and in their extensions defined in ISO 13584-25. Identification dictionary is given in Annex A. The following are within the scope of this document: — standard data that represent the classes of rolling bearings; — standard data that represent the properties of rolling bearings; — standard data that represent domains of values used for properties of rolling bearings. The following are outside of the scope of this document: — methodology for structuring parts families used for specifying standard data defined in this document; — an implementation method by which the standard data defined in this document can be exchanged. NOTE 1 The structure of the physical file used for exchanging the standard data defined in this document is specified in ISO 10303‑21. NOTE 2 The physical file used for exchanging the standard data is compliant with ISO 13584-42:2010. NOTE 3 It is intended to provide an OntoML-based (XML) representation of the standard data when ISO 13584-32 (OntoML) is published. This document does not establish the reference dictionaries for linear motion rolling bearings and spherical plain bearings.

This document provides nomenclature for general modes of gear tooth wear and failure. It classifies, identifies, and describes the most common types of failure and provides information that, in many cases, enables the user to identify failure modes and evaluate the degree or change from original condition. This document is based on experience with steel gears; however, many of the failure modes discussed apply to gears made from other materials. Not all failure modes that can occur on other types of gears, such as plastic, bronze, or powder metal gears, are included. The solution to many gear problems requires detailed investigation and analysis by specialists and is beyond the scope of this document. This document specifies only the terminology intended to help with the identification and reporting of the appearance and conditions of gears after a period of operation. Neither causes nor preventive measures for any condition described are discussed. In this document, gear refers to both gear wheels and pinions, unless the gear is specifically identified. This document does not define “gear failure”.

ISO 1081:2013 specifies the terms and definitions, in English and French, relating to V-belt drives, V-belts, hexagonal belts, joined V-belts and the corresponding V-grooved pulleys, V-ribbed belt drives, V-ribbed belts and V-ribbed pulleys, as well as the corresponding symbols. The general definitions are valid irrespective of the system describing the pulleys. The dimensions of pulley grooves can be defined either on the basis of the datum width or on the basis of the effective width. As a result, two systems for the definition and description of the dimensions of pulleys and belts have been developed. The two systems are independent of each other.

ISO 4378-4:2009 defines basic symbols for use in the field of plain bearings. Additional signs are also defined for use as superscripts and subscripts.
The characters employed are drawn from the Latin and Greek alphabets, Arabic numerals and other signs, for example points, commas, horizontal lines or asterisks. In the simplest case, an application symbol consists of the basic character alone; in the most complex, of the basic character with subscripts and superscripts (additional signs). For the purposes of international applicability, all basic symbols and additional signs have been derived from English words, and designations used in technical literature up to now have been adopted as far as possible. Wide conformity of the symbols for all types of plain bearings has been attempted.
This classification is established for use in calculations and technological and geometrical determinations, as well as in the quality assurance of plain bearings.

This part of ISO 1122 concerns the part of the
international vocabulary of gears which is devoted
solely to geometrical definitions.
It gives, for each of the geometrical terms relative to
gears, a standard definition which will be valid
internationally, the corresponding term in each
language being chosen as far as possible in such a
way as to directly reflect the meaning of the
definition.
NOTE — Since the choice of corresponding terms can
only be partially fulfilled in any particular language, due to
the necessity of respecting certain established
conventions, it is advisable, as far as translation into other
languages is concerned, to refer always to the meaning of
the definition itself, rather than to a simple transposition of
the original term.

This part of ISO 4378 specifies practical applications of the general symbols defined in ISO 4378-4, with
regard to the calculations, design and testing of plain bearings.
ISO 4378-4 distinguishes between basic characters and additional signs. Additional signs are subscripts and
superscripts. The symbols necessary for plain bearing calculations, design, manufacture and testing are just
basic characters or combinations of basic characters and additional signs.
This part of ISO 4378 lists symbols which have been found necessary for the calculations, design and testing
of plain bearings. They have been defined in accordance with the recommendations given in ISO 4378-4.
Angles and directions of rotation are defined positively as rotating in a left-hand (anticlockwise) direction; the
same applies to rotational frequencies, and circumferential and angular velocities.

ISO 1891:2009 provides translation guidance for terms commonly used to describe fasteners. ISO 1891:2009 lays down the terminology of fasteners in English, French and Russian, recommended for use unless otherwise specified in the appropriate product standard. At present, not all of the fasteners listed are covered by ISO documents. For the main part, the items have been selected from existing national standards. Also included are obsolescent types (those being used up from stock) in order that their terminology may be standardized at the same time. The drawings are essentially diagrammatic, in particular those showing bolts and screws having special characteristics. In addition to terms used in the three official ISO languages (English, French and Russian), ISO 1891:2009 gives the equivalent terms in Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Swedish; these are published under the responsibility of the member bodies for China (SAC), Germany (DIN), Italy (UNI), Japan (JISC), Spain (AENOR), and Sweden (SIS), respectively, and are given for information only. Only the terms given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms.

This International Standard presents general terms and definitions relevant to the field of spherical plain bearings. It deals with bearings, bearing parts and features, movements, angles and rod ends.
NOTE — In addition to terms and definitions used in the three official ISO languages (English, French and Russian), this International Standard gives
the equivalent terms and definitions in the German language; these are published under the responsibility of the member body for Germany (DIN).
However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms and definitions.
