Ductile iron pipes, fittings and accessories - Sanitary characteristics and test methods

This Technical Report contains the sanitary characteristics and test methods applicable to those factory applied lining, coating and jointing materials of ductile iron pipes and fittings conforming to EN 545 which are in contact with water intended for human consumption for use at operating temperatures up to 50 °C. Ductile cast iron itself is not in direct contact with the conveyed water therefore no characteristics in respect to the sanitary behaviour are necessary. As ductile cast iron is impermeable against diffusion of organic substances the water quality is maintained in service. Different surface/volume ratios are used in the tests for pipes, fittings and joints to reflect the different impact of their surface areas exposed to the water in the overall pipeline.

Tehnično poročilo vsebuje sanitarne karakteristike in preskusne metode, ki se uporabljajo za tiste tovarniške obložne, premazne in spojne materiale cevi in fitingov iz duktilne železove litine, ki so skladni s standardom EN 545, so v stiku s pitno vodo in se uporabljajo pri delovnih temperaturah do 50° C. Duktilna železova litina ni v neposrednem stiku z dobavljeno vodo, zato karakteristike v zvezi s sanitarnim obnašanjem niso potrebne. Ker duktilna železova litina ne prepušča organskih snovi, se kakovost vode ohranja. Pri preskusih cevi, fitingov in spojev se uporabljajo različna razmerja med površino in prostornino, da se prikaže različne vplive na njihove površine prek celotnega cevovoda, ko so izpostavljeni vodi.

This European Standard is a complementary document for the installation of ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories and their joints, covered by EN 598:2009 harmonized standard. This European Standard specifies the requirements and associated test methods applicable to ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories and their joints for the construction of pipelines outside buildings:
-   to convey different types of water (e.g. raw water, treated water, re-used water) for all types of applications (e.g. water intended for human consumption, for fire protection, for snow making, for irrigation, for hydro-electricity etc.);
-   with or without pressure;
-   to be installed below or above ground.
This European Standard is applicable to pipes, fittings and accessories which are:
-   manufactured with socketed, flanged or spigot ends;
-   supplied externally and internally coated;
-               suitable for fluid temperatures between 0 °C and 50 °C, excluding frost;
-   not intended for use in areas subject to fire regulations.
NOTE 1   This does not preclude special arrangements for the products to be used at higher temperatures.
This European Standard covers pipes and fittings cast by any type of foundry process or manufactured by fabrication of cast components, as well as corresponding joints and accessories, in a size range extending from DN 40 to DN 2 000, inclusive.
This European Standard specifies requirements for materials, dimensions and tolerances, mechanical properties and standard coatings of ductile iron pipes and fittings. It also gives performance requirements for all components including joints. Joint design and gasket shapes are outside the scope of this standard.
In addition, reference is made to the performance requirements of couplings, flange adaptors and saddles manufactured for use with ductile iron pipes and fittings.
NOTE 2   In this European Standard, all pressures are relative pressures, expressed in bars (100 kPa = 1 bar).

EN 598 specifies the requirements and associated test methods applicable to ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories and their joints for the construction of drains and sewers outside buildings:
-   operating without pressure (gravity sewerage), or with positive or negative pressure;
-   to be installed below or above ground;
-   to convey surface water, domestic waste water and certain types of industrial effluents, either in separate systems or in combined systems.
This technical report:
-   explains in more detail the process of testing for the performance tests;
-   explains in more detail the benefits of high alumina cement lining;
-   explains in more detail the definitions of the different types/levels of attestation to enable customers to ensure their requirements are fulfilled;
-   explains in more detail the ways of certification of conformity with EN 598 for a reliable evaluation of the performance of products;
-   explains in more detail CE marking and its relevance i.e. the CE mark is not a mark of conformity with a standard but only a self-declaration concerning the CPD essential requirements.
