This document specifies the qualitative and quantitative analysis methods for the determination of the presence and content of zirconium with a particle size of less than 40 µm in pyrotechnic compositions by specific colour-rendering reactions and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), with a minimum detection limit of 100 mg/kg. The determination of the presence of zirconium with a particle size of less than 40 µm is required for application of ISO 25947-5. Quantitative analysis may bring complementary information if necessary.

1 Scope
This document specifies the qualitative and quantitative analysis methods for the determination of the
presence and content of zirconium with a particle size of less than 40 µm in pyrotechnic compositions
by specific colour-rendering reactions and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry
(ICP-OES), with a minimum detection limit of 100 mg/kg.
The determination of the presence of zirconium with a particle size of less than 40 µm is required for
application of ISO 25947-5. Quantitative analysis may bring complementary information if necessary.

4 Principle of the method
Qualitative analysis of zirconium: decomposition of the sample with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid,
hydrofluoric acid and perchloric acid, removal of fluorine ions by evaporation of perchloric acid,
determination of the presence of zirconium by the specific coloration reaction with arsenazo III in
strong acidic solution.
Hydrofluoric acid may not be used if the composition of the tested sample does not contain titanium.
Quantitative analysis of zirconium: decomposition of the sample with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid,
hydrofluoric acid and perchloric acid and then use of Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission
Spectrometry to determine the zirconium content.

5 Reagents
Unless otherwise stated, only confirmed as analytical reagent, distilled water or deionized water or
equivalent purity water shall be used.
5.1 Hydrochloric acid (ρ = 1,19 g/ml)
5.2 Diluted hydrochloric acid (1 part acid + 1 part water)
5.3 Nitric acid (ρ = 1,42 g/ml)
5.4 Hydrofluoric acid (ρ = 1,15 g/ml)
5.5 Perchloric acid (ρ = 1,67 g/ml)
5.6 Diluted Nitric acid (1 part acid + 1 part water)
5.7 Diluted Nitric acid (1 part acid + 19 parts water)
5.8 Tartaric acid solution (20 g of tartaric acid dissolved in 100 ml of water)

4 Principe de la méthode
Analyse qualitative du zirconium: décomposition de l’échantillon à l’aide d’acide chlorhydrique, d’acide
nitrique, d’acide fluorhydrique et d’acide perchlorique, élimination des ions fluor par évaporation de
l’acide perchlorique, détection de la présence de zirconium par la réaction de coloration spécifique avec
de l’arsenazo III en solution acide forte.
L’acide fluorhydrique peut ne pas être utilisé si la composition de l’échantillon pour essai ne contient
pas de titane.

Analyse quantitative du zirconium: décomposition de l’échantillon à l’aide d’acide chlorhydrique, d’acide
nitrique, d’acide fluorhydrique et d’acide perchlorique, puis utilisation de la spectrométrie d’émission
optique à plasma à couplage inductif pour déterminer la teneur en zirconium.
5 Réactifs
Sauf indication contraire, utiliser uniquement des réactifs de qualité analytique confirmée, de l’eau
distillée ou de l’eau déionisée ou une eau d’une pureté équivalente.
5.1 Acide chlorhydrique (ρ = 1,19 g/ml)
5.2 Acide chlorhydrique dilué (1 part d’acide + 1 part d’eau)
5.3 Acide nitrique (ρ = 1,42 g/ml)
5.4 Acide fluorhydrique (ρ = 1,15 g/ml)
5.5 Acide perchlorique (ρ = 1,67 g/ml)
5.6 Acide nitrique dilué (1 part d’acide + 1 part d’eau)
5.7 Acide nitrique dilué (1 part d’acide + 19 parts d’eau)
5.8 Solution d’acide tartrique (20 g d’acide tartrique dissous dans 100 ml d’eau)
5.9 Solution d’urée (5 g d’urée dissous dans 100 ml d’eau)
5.10 Solution d’arsenazo III (0,1 g d’arsenazo III dissous dans 100 ml d’eau)
5.11 Solution étalon de zirconium (1 000 μg/ml)
5.12 Solution étalon diluée de zirconium (100 μg/ml):
Verser 10,00 ml de solution étalon de zirconium (5.11) dans une fiole de 100 ml, ajouter de l’acide
nitrique dilué (5.7) jusqu’à atteindre la graduation de 100 ml, puis homogénéiser.
6 Appareillage
6.1 Spectromètre d’émission optique à plasma à couplage inductif:
Les conditions d’utilisation doivent être conformes aux instructions du fabricant.
6.2 Balance analytique: précision 0,1 mg.
6.3 Plaque chauffante électrique: pouvant atteindre une température de 500 °C
6.4 Béchers en quartz
6.5 Fioles jaugées: de 100 ml
6.6 Tubes à essai

1 Scope
This document specifies the qualitative and quantitative analysis methods for the determination of the
presence and content of zirconium with a particle size of less than 40 µm in pyrotechnic compositions
by specific colour-rendering reactions and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry
(ICP-OES), with a minimum detection limit of 100 mg/kg.
The determination of the presence of zirconium with a particle size of less than 40 µm is required for
application of ISO 25947-5. Quantitative analysis may bring complementary information if necessary.

4 Principle of the method
Qualitative analysis of zirconium: decomposition of the sample with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid,
hydrofluoric acid and perchloric acid, removal of fluorine ions by evaporation of perchloric acid,
determination of the presence of zirconium by the specific coloration reaction with arsenazo III in
strong acidic solution.
Hydrofluoric acid may not be used if the composition of the tested sample does not contain titanium.
