BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 185, Classijîcation of Grey Cast Iron, was drawn up by
Technical Committee ISO/TC 25, Cast Iron, the Secretariat of which is held by the British
Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1955 and led, in 1959,
to the adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In June 1959, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 220) was circulated to all the
IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to some amendments, by the
following Member Bodies :
Australia Greece Romania
Belgium Spain
Hungary
Burma India Sweden
Chile Italy Switzerland
United Kingdom
Czechoslovakia Netherlands
New Zealand U.S.A.
Denmark
Finland Norway
Germany Portugal
One Member Body opposed the approval of the Draft: France.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0
Council, which decided, in November 1961, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION
provided the text was completed by the last sentence of the Note preceding Table 2.

2. MACHINED STANDARD TENSILE TEST PIECES
2.1 The test bar is cast as a cylindrical bar of 30 + 3 mm ( 1.2 + 8::; in) diameter, the length
being dependent on the type of the test piece (A or B) and whether the machined test
piece is to have plain or screwed ends.
2.2
The machined standard tensile test piece, Type A, is of the dimensions shown in Figure 1
and Table 1. The machined standard tensile test piece, npe B, is of the dimensions
shown in Figure 2 and Table 1.
If plain ends are used, the diameter should be 23 mm (0.9 in) minimum. If screwed ends
