Introduction
This document applies to a Pyrotechnic obscuration security device. This document is part of the Intruder
and Hold-up Alarm System (I&HAS) standard series.
The purpose of a pyrotechnic obscuration security device is to reduce the visibility in a protected area by
the use of a non-toxic pyro obscuration system in order to form a barrier between the criminal and the
criminal’s intended target.
This document is intended to define the requirements of a security Pyrotechnic Obscuration Security
Device and to set up performance criteria in order to comply with the purpose described above.
Pyrotechnic obscuration security devices are not explosives, they produce smoke by combustion.
Pyrotechnic obscuration security device differs from Fog obscuration devices in the generation and mean
of obscuration. The safety requirements for pyrotechnical products (marketing, transport, manipulation,
disposal…) are set forth in European regulation. This document is not intended to provide with criteria to
assess the compliance with these regulations.
This document has been designed to be flexible enough to encourage and encompass future
developments in the field of security obscuration device.

a) Design HW to meet a failure rate = < 10E-07 f/h, to avoid as far as reasonable in terms of costs,
single point non-detected failure by application of FMECA and FTA analysis. The failure rate
prediction will be based on MIL-HDBK-217 / BellCore / Telcordia.

EN 60730 Class B (see note below):
— Ignitor/trigger circuit internal test covering power-on BIT and continuity circuit test
— Input circuit failure.
— Over-temperature test
— Micro-processor internal test. Use standard EN 60730 test libraries (provided by
microprocessors vendors) and a watchdog.
— Safety Built-in test (BIT)
— Communication circuit (wired or wireless) with IAS internal test
c) Apply SW development techniques like SIL2 level defined at EN 61508.
POD shall be Class B according to Annex H of EN 60730-1:2016.
8.2.11 Isolation of the POD
Manufacturer shall declare the means of isolating the POD from the CIE and the CIE shall be set up to
avoid POD triggers during installation and/or routine maintenance.

Power supply shall comply with EN 50131-6, and EN 50131-1 requirements for power supply.
A power failure shall not lead to the triggering of the security pyrotechnic obscuration security device.
If a power failure occurs, the security pyrotechnic obscuration security device shall send a signal or
message to the IAS within specified time according to the power supply type and security grade as stated
in EN 50131-6.
