Solid Biofuels - Determination of particle size distribution for uncompressed fuels - Part 1: Oscillating screen method using sieves with apertures of 3,15 mm and above (ISO 17827-1:2016)

This international standard describes method for determination of the the size distribution of particulate biofuels by the
horizontally oscillating screen method. It applies to particulate uncompressed fuels with a nominal top size of 1 mm and
above such as wood chips, hog fuel, olive stones etc. A sample is subjected to sieving through horizontally oscillating
sieves, sorting the particles in decreasing size classes by mechanical means.The sieving operation shall be horizontally
oscillating (one or two dimensional), using an appropriate stroke-frequency according to the type of material. The number of
sieves and the aperture sizes of the sieves shall be chosen according to the size specification of the actual sample material.

ISO 17827-1:2016 spécifie une méthode pour la détermination de la distribution granulométrique de biocombustibles particulaires au tamis oscillant dans le plan horizontal. Elle s'applique aux combustibles particulaires non comprimés de dimension supérieure nominale égale ou supérieure à 3,15 mm, tels que les copeaux, les bûchettes, les noyaux d'olive, etc. La méthode a pour but de caractériser les matériaux jusqu'à une classe granulométrique de P63. Pour les classes en P supérieures, la caractérisation se fait essentiellement par tri manuel.

Ta mednarodni standard opisuje metodo za določevanje porazdelitve velikosti delcev biogoriv z metodo z vodoravno nihajočim sitom. Uporablja se za nestisnjena goriva z nazivno zrnatostjo vsaj 1 mm, kot so lesni sekanci, drobljenci, olivne koščice itd. Vzorec se preseje skozi vodoravno nihajoča sita, ki mehansko razvrstijo delce po velikosti od največjih do najmanjših. Sejanje mora potekati z vodoravno nihajočim premikanjem (eno- ali dvodimenzionalno) in uporabo ustrezne frekvence sunkov v skladu z vrsto materiala. Število sit in velikosti njihovih odprtin je treba izbrati v skladu s specifikacijo velikosti dejanskega vzorčnega materiala.

1 Scope
This part of ISO 17827 specifies a method for the determination of the size distribution of particulate
biofuels by the horizontally oscillating screen method. It applies to particulate uncompressed
fuels with a nominal top size of 3,15 mm and above, e.g. wood chips, hog fuel, olive stones, etc. The
method is intended to characterize material up to a particle size class of P63. For larger P-classes, the
characterization is mainly done by hand sorting.

Median value of the size distribution
The median value [d50] separates a distribution into two equal parts. Graphically the median value is
the intercept point of the cumulative size distribution curve with the 50-%-horizontal-line

4 Principle
A test sample is subjected to sieving through horizontally oscillating sieves, sorting the particles in
decreasing size classes by mechanical means.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Sieves
For the test an appropriate number of either circular or rectangular sieves with a minimum effective

sieve area of 1200 cm is required. The sieves shall have round perforated holes in metal plate in
accordance with ISO 3310 Part 2. The frame of the sieves shall have a height that enable the sieves to
contain the sample and allows a free movement of the sample during the sieving process.
The number of sieves and the aperture sizes of the sieves shall be chosen in accordance with the size
specification for the actual test sample material (see also ISO 17225‑1)
