This document specifies a test method for inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for the detection of the sulfur content from 2 mg/kg to 21 mg/kg in fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). NOTE 1 For the purposes of this document, the term "% (m/m)" is used to represent the mass fraction (µ) of the material. NOTE 2 The method can also be used for the determination of concentrations outside the given limits. The precision statement, however, is only valid for the concentration range given in the scope. NOTE 3 The method described in the document was tested with FAME derived from soybean oil and beef tallow. FAME derived from other feedstock, in particular aged oils, may behave different due to the different nature of sulfur compounds.

ISO/TS 17307:2016 establishes a method for determining the total methyl ester content in fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) by gas chromatography and using an external standard. The method is suitable for biodiesel which contains esters between C6 and C26. This method allows verifying that the total ester content is greater than 96,5 % (m/m). NOTE 1 The method also allows determination of the total ethyl ester content in FAEE, but precision for this has not been established. This Technical Specification does not determine the linolenic nor the poly-unsaturated alkyl ester content. Alternative techniques, such as EN 14103[1] and EN 15779[2], respectively, are available for this. NOTE 2 For the purposes of this Technical Specification, the term "% (m/m)" is used to represent the mass fraction, µ.

ISO/TS 17306:2016 establishes a methodology for quantitative determination of free glycerol, mono-, di-, triacylglycerols and total glycerol by gas chromatography in biodiesel produced from any raw material including coconut or palm oil and animal fat. It is not applicable for biodiesel from castor oil. In most actual cases, biodiesel is based on fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). These have also been used during the precision study for this test method. There is no indication that the methodology does not apply to other ester types, but the precision has not been determined nor compared. NOTE For the purposes of this Technical Specification, the term "% (m/m)" is used to represent the mass fraction, µ.
