ISO/TC 96/SC 5 - Use, operation and maintenance

This document specifies the minimum training to be given to trainee crane slingers and crane signallers to develop the basic slinging skills and to impart the requisite knowledge for competency required for slingers and signallers as defined in ISO 15513.

ISO 9928-1:2015 specifies general requirements for the contents of a crane operating manual.

ISO 9942-1:2015 specifies the minimum requirements for labels for the identification (marking) and the operation of cranes.

ISO 12482:2014 specifies a method for monitoring, during long-term operation, the actual duty of the crane, and a means of comparing this to the original design duty which was specified through classification. The related design standard is ISO 4301‑1. Approaching the design life limit means an increased probability of hazards. Monitoring of crane use ? as described herein ? provides a tool for predicting the approach of the design limits and for focusing special inspections on the critical areas of a crane. ISO 12482:2014 is intended to be used for adjusting/modifying the inspections defined in ISO 9927‑1. It is applicable to cranes with a permanent construction throughout the life of the crane. It is not applicable to mobile or tower cranes, except permanently installed tower cranes. The method it specifies can be adapted to standards or rules other than ISO 4301‑1 which specify classifications.

ISO 6715:2014 gives requirements for hand signals to be used in lifting operations.

ISO 9927:2013 specifies the general requirements for inspections to be carried out on cranes as defined in ISO 4306‑1. Additional requirements for particular types of cranes are intended to be covered by the relevant specific parts of ISO 9927.

ISO 23814:2009 specifies the competency required for persons who carry out periodic and thorough inspections of cranes. It excludes the inspection and checks performed by crane operators and maintenance personnel.

ISO 23813:2007 specifies the minimum training needed to impart the requisite knowledge for a person appointed to control and manage the lifting operations of cranes. It is not applicable to the additional training required for those persons controlling and managing lifting operations involving dangerous goods or hazardous areas.

ISO 23815-1:2007 establishes required practices for the maintenance of cranes by owners/users.

This International Standard gives competency requirements applicable for the selection, training, assessment and verification of crane drivers (operators), slingers, signallers and their assessors. This International Standard does not cover additional competency requirements needed for special operations, e.g. man-lifting, pile-driving or pile-pulling. NOTE 1 Responsibilities for the performance of tasks are given in ISO 12480-1. However, personnel need to be aware of the responsibilities of others; inclusion in the training programme should not infer any changes in responsibilities. NOTE 2 For training of drivers (operators), see ISO 9926.

Guidelines on the general requirements necessary for the preparation and presentation of spare parts manuals for cranes.

Specifies the minimum training to be given to trainee drivers of cranes, to develop basic operational skills and to impart the requisite knowledge for the proper use of those skills. Does not specify any procedure for evaluating capabilities or qualifications of the trainees.

ISO 9927-1:2009 specifies the inspections to be carried out on cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1. It does not cover the inspections carried out prior to the first use of the crane.

ISO 23853:2004 specifies the minimum training to be given to trainee crane slingers and crane signallers to develop the basic slinging skills and to impart the requisite knowledge for competency required for slingers and signallers as defined in ISO 15513.

Purpose of this part is to ensure that the design constraints of the intended use of a crane are clearly identified and to define actions to be taken when the crane has been used over a period of time and has approached these constraints, to ensure a new safe working period. A description is given of the special assessment required to monitor the condition of a crane.

Specifies the regular inspections to be carried out on cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1, ISO 4306-2 and ISO 4306-3.

Specifies the minimum requirements for labels for the identification and the operation of cranes.

Gives guidance on the contents and the presentation of a crane driving manual which include: technical data, special safety advice, driver's aids and controls, driver's instructions, load diagrams and load tables, safety devices, environmental conditions.
