This document specifies the measurement procedures and test cycles for the evaluation of smoke emissions from compression ignition engines using an opacimeter. The tests are carried out under steady-state and transient operation using tests cycles which are representative of a given application. The smoke testing is conducted using opacimeter-type smoke meters which operate on the light extinction principle. The purpose of this document is to define the smoke test cycles and the methods used to measure the opacity and for the determination of the light absorption coefficient. It allows the use of either full-flow or partial-flow opacimeters and corrects for differences in rise time between the two types of opacimeters. Specifications of the apparatus for the measurement of opacity can be found in ISO 11614. The test procedures and measurement techniques described in this document are applicable to reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines in general. Annex D, Annex E, Annex F and Annex G each contains a test cycle that is relevant only for those specific applications listed in the first subclause of that annex. Where possible, the smoke test cycle described in the annex utilizes the engine and machine categories developed in ISO 8178‑4. For certain categories of non-road engines "at site" rather than "test bed" smoke test procedures can prove to be necessary. For engines used in machinery covered by additional requirements (e.g. occupational health and safety regulations), additional test conditions and special evaluation methods can apply.

ISO 8528-8:2016 defines design requirements, minimum performances and type tests for low-power generating sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion engines for land and marine use (domestic, recreational and industrial application), excluding generating sets used on aircraft. It concerns mainly low-power generating sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion engines for the generation of single or multiphase alternating current or direct current up to 500 V. The generating sets are standard manufactured sets. In this part of ISO 8528, "low-power" is taken to mean rated power of a magnitude up to approximately 10 kW/50 Hz, 12 kW/60 Hz. Low-power generating sets, for the purpose of this International Standard, are determined by the following special features: - the users normally are laymen (for further details, see 3.1); - the complete generating set is usually transportable or mobile; - the electrical output is connected by means of plugs, sockets and screwed terminal except for extra low voltages; - the generating set is ready for use without any additional installation work by the user. Generating sets for special applications or of higher rated power conforming to the above special features may, by agreement between manufacturer and customer, be tested in accordance with this part of ISO 8528. If supplementary stipulations are required for certain applications, this is to be done taking this part of ISO 8528 as a basis. ISO 8528-8:2016 deals with the special requirements of design and test which are observed in addition to the definitions and requirements laid down in ISO 8528-1, ISO 8528-2, ISO 8528-3, ISO 8528-4, ISO 8528-5 and ISO 8528-6, where applicable. ISO 8528-8:2016 does not deal with safety requirements in order to protect the user from dangers which are laid down in ISO 8528‑13. NOTE This International Standard does not apply to arc welding equipment (IEC 60974 series).

ISO 3046-4:2009 establishes a classification for the requirements and parameters of speed-governing systems and specifies terms and definitions of typical engine speeds for reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines. Where necessary, individual requirements are given for particular engine applications. ISO 3046-4:2009 applies to RIC engines for land, rail-traction and marine use, excluding engines used to propel road-construction and earth-moving machines, agricultural and industrial types of tractors, road vehicles and aircraft. Also excluded are self-governing engines and those engines requiring only maximum speed or maximum fuel delivery limitation. ISO 3046-4:2009 defines requirements for compression–ignition oil engines (diesel engines). For spark ignition engines and dual fuel engines, special requirements can apply.

ISO 21006:2006 specifies how to make a declaration of the engine weight (mass) for internal combustion engines. For the purposes of this standard, the word weight is used as the direct equivalent of the word mass. ISO 21006:2006 concerns reciprocating internal combustion engines (spark-ignition or compression ignition engines) but excluding free piston engines, and rotary piston engines. NOTE These engines may be naturally aspirated or pressure-charged, either by a mechanical pressure-charger or a turbocharger. ISO 21006:2006 applies to engines for land, rail-traction and marine use, the propulsion of automotive vehicles, propelling (or powering) non-road mobile machinery, motorcycles, the propulsion of agricultural tractors and machines, the propulsion of earth-moving machinery as defined in ISO 6165, and the propulsion of recreational or other small marine craft of full length up to 24 m . In addition, ISO 21006:2006 may be applied to engines used to propel road-construction machines, industrial trucks and for other applications where no suitable International Standard for these engines exists.
