ISO/TC 102/SC 1 - Sampling

This document specifies a method for the determination of the moisture content of a lot of iron ore. This method is applicable to all iron ores, whether natural or processed.

This document specifies experimental methods for checking the precision of sampling, sample preparation and measurement of iron ores being carried out in accordance with the methods specified in ISO 3082 and the relevant ISO standards for measurement. This document can also be applied for the purpose of checking the precision of sampling, sample preparation and measurement separately.

This document specifies the methods to be employed for determination of size distributions by sieving of iron ore and direct reduced iron (excluding briquetted iron), utilizing sieves having aperture sizes of 36 µm or larger. The size distribution is expressed in terms of mass and percentage mass, passed or retained on selected sieves. The purpose of this document is to provide a basis for any testing of iron ore and direct reduced iron involving size determination for use by contracting parties in the sale and purchase of these materials. When this document is used for comparative purposes, the concerned parties will agree on the selection of the detailed method to be employed in order to eliminate sources of subsequent controversy.

ISO 3082:2017 provides a) the underlying theory, b) the basic principles for sampling and preparation of samples, and c) the basic requirements for the design, installation and operation of sampling systems for mechanical sampling, manual sampling and preparation of samples taken from a lot under transfer. This is in order to determine the chemical composition, moisture content, size distribution and other physical and metallurgical properties of the lot, except bulk density obtained using ISO 3852 (Method 2). The methods specified in this document are applicable to both the loading and discharging of a lot by means of belt conveyors and other ore-handling equipment to which a mechanical sampler can be installed or where manual sampling can safely be conducted. The methods are applicable to all iron ores, whether natural or processed (e.g. concentrates and agglomerates, such as pellets or sinters).

ISO 16742:2014 sets out the basic methods for sampling fine iron ore of nominal top size The procedures described in ISO 16742:2014 apply to sampling of iron ore that is transported in moving streams as a slurry. These streams can fall freely or be confined in pipes, launders, chutes, spirals, or similar channels.

ISO 10835:2007 gives the underlying theory, the basic principles for sampling and preparation of samples, and the basic requirements for the design, installation and operation of sampling systems, for mechanical sampling, manual sampling and preparation of samples taken from a lot under transfer, to determine the chemical composition, moisture content and physical properties of the lot. The methods specified in this International Standard are applicable to both the loading and discharging of direct reduced iron (DRI) and hot briquetted iron (HBI), by means of belt conveyors and other ore handling equipment to which a mechanical sampler may be installed or where stopped-belt sampling may safely be conducted. In this International Standard, DRI includes both reduced pellets and reduced lump ores.

ISO 3086:2006 specifies experimental methods for checking the bias of sampling of iron ores, when sampling is carried out in accordance with the methods specified in ISO 3082:2000, having as reference a stopped-belt sampling method.

This International Standard specifies experimental methods for the evaluation of quality variation of iron ores for each type of iron ore being traded and for each handling plant. Two distinct approaches are specified. The first is to analyse interleaved samples composed of a number of paired increments taken and combined alternately following stratified sampling or systematic sampling as specified in ISO 3082. The second is to collect and analyse individual increments and then to analyse the data using variographic methods. Using interleaved samples involves less work, but use of variograms provides a better estimate of quality variation and hence a better estimate of the sampling variance. The variogram method is usually used to fine tune a sampling operation. NOTE The experimental methods may be applied approximately to time basis sampling when the flowrate is almost uniform.

Deals with manual methods of increment sampling and sample preparation of direct reduced iron to obtain samples for size analysis, moisture determination and chemical analysis. Applicable to the taking of samples of direct reduced iron from conveyors, railway wagons or containers (including trucks) and stockpiles.

The testing covered refers to the physical test methods specified in the relevant international standards (ISO 3271, 3852, 4695, 4696, 4698, 4700, 7215, 7992). With respect to the bulk density test, only method 1 in ISO 3852, using a small container for iron ores having a nominal top size of 40 mm or smaller, falls within the scope.
