Protective clothing against liquid and gaseous chemicals, including liquid aerosols and solid particles - Part 1: Performance requirements for ventilated and non-ventilated "gas-tight" (Type 1) and "non-gas-tight" (Type 2) chemical protective suits

This European Standard specifies the minimum requirements, test methods, marking and information supplied by the manufacturer for the following ventilated and non-ventilated limited use and re-usable chemical protective suits, including component parts such as gloves and boots which can be specified elsewhere.
Type 1 - "gas-tight" chemical protective suit
Type 1a - "gas-tight" chemical protective suit with a breathable air supply independent of the ambient atmosphere, e.g. a self-contained open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus, worn inside the chemical protective suit.
Type 1b - "gas-tight" chemical protective suit with a breathable air supply, e.g. a self-contained open- circuit compressed air breathing apparatus, worn outside the chemical protective suit.
NOTE   As chemical protective suits are used with respiratory devices, special attention should be given to the adequate selection of respiratory protective equipment. The limiting factors for the use of respirator filters (e.g. oxygen deficiency) should be taken into consideration.
Type 1c - "gas-tight" chemical protective suit with breathable air providing positive pressure, e.g. air lines.
Type 2 -"non-gas tight" chemical protective suit
"Non-gas-tight" chemical protective suit with breathable air providing positive pressure.

ANMERKUNG   Da Chemikalienschutzanzüge in Verbindung mit Atemgeräten benutzt werden, sollte der angemessenen Auswahl der Atemschutzgeräte besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet werden. Die begrenzenden Faktoren für den Gebrauch von Atemfiltern (z. B. Sauerstoffmangel) sollten berücksichtigt werden.

EN 943-1:2002 (E)3ForewordThis document EN 943-1:2002 has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 162 "Protective clothingincluding hand and arm protection and life jackets", the secretariat of which is held by DIN.This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text orby endorsement, at the latest by March 2003, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest byMarch 2003.The CEN/TC 162 decided in April 1989 to start with the work and to allocate it to WG3 "Resistance to chemicalsof protective clothing".During the plenary meeting of CEN/TC 162 in February 1992 the proposal was presented to the TC andaccepted. The proposal was transmitted to the secretariat of CEN/TC 162 with the request to induce thepublishing of the draft European Standard. Following the first Preliminary Enquiry of separate standards for Type1 and 2 re-usable protective clothing it was agreed to combine these into a single standard and include limiteduse clothing. Applicable for suits where air is vented from the facemask into the chemical protective suit and when the self-contained breathing apparatus is worn outside the suit and air from the cylinder is fed into the suit for ventilation.5 Performance requirements for the whole suit5.1 GeneralChemical protective suits shall fulfil the requirements given in Table 2 when tested as a complete suit.The suit shall be made so that the wearer has freedom of movement and is as comfortable as possible,consistent with the protection afforded by the garment when tested in accordance with 6.25.2 ConditioningThe complete suit shall be exposed:a) for not less than 4 h to an atmosphere of (60 ± 3) °C at 95 % relative humidity; followed byb) for not less than 4 h to a temperature of (-30 ± 3) °C and allowed to return to ambient conditions.It shall then be allowed to return to ambient temperature. If these temperatures are incompatible themanufacturer shall state this and state the designed conditions in the instructions.

EN 943-1:2002 (E)105.6 Full facemaskOnly facemasks complying with class 2 or 3 of EN 136:1998 shall be used.If the suit incorporates a full face mask bonded or fixed in such a way that the connection is integral to the suitthe system of joining must not interfere with the face to mask seal or any other function of the facemask, whentested in accordance with 6.2.If the facemask is attached to the suit in a non-permanent manner the sealing mechanism shall be tested inaccordance with EN 463. There shall be no penetration of the facemask to suit join according to the followingcriteria: join penetration has occurred when the total stain area on the undergarment is greater than three timesthe calibrated stain area. Three samples of facemask to suit joins shall be tested after conditioning to 5.2.5.7 Pass-thru for use with self-contained breathing apparatusIf fitted, the pass-thru shall satisfy the requirements of 5.7.1, 5.7.2 and 5.7.35.7.1 Strength of pass-thruThe pass-thru and connections to the suit and body shall be tested in accordance with 6.1 and 6.2.The complete device and its assembly to the suit and body shall withstand a steady force of 1 000 N when testedin accordance with 7.10 of EN 270:1994.5.7.2 Performance of pass-thruThe unit complete with connections shall deliver a minimum 300 l/min at 550 kPa (5,5 bar).5.7.3 Resistance to kinkingIf a flexible air supply hose is fitted externally the hose shall maintain a near circular shape when extended froma loop and shall not decrease airflow by more than 10 % when tested in accordance with 6.11.1 of EN 270:1994.5.8 Air supply systemIf a mobile high pressure air supply is to be used it shall comply with 6.10 of EN 270:1994. If a stationary highpressure air supply is to be used it shall comply with the performance criteria specified by the manufacturer ofthe chemical protective suit. The air delivered by the air supply system shall conform with EN 12021.5.8.1 CouplingsThe equipment shall be constructed so that any twisting of the hoses and tubes does not affect the fit orperformance of the equipment, or cause the hoses or tubes to be disconnected. The design of the coupling shallbe such as to prevent unintentional interruption of the air supply. At least one swivelling coupling shall be fitted tothe compressed air supply tube adjacent to the wearer.Where a hand operated connection is fitted to the outlet of the compressed air tube it shall incorporate a self-sealing coupling to seal the air supply. Test in accordance with 6.1 and 6.2.5.8.2 ConnectionsComponents of the apparatus shall be readily separated for cleaning, examining and testing. All demountableconnections shall be readily connected and secured, where possible by hand. Any means of sealing used shallbe retained in position when the joints and couplings are disconnected during normal maintenance. Test inaccordance with 6.1 and 6.2.



EN 943-1:2002 (E)115.8.3 Connections strengthThe connection between the compressed air supply tube and the chemical protective suit, including attachments,threaded parts, belt or other parts, or means of stabilising the suit to the body shall conform with 6.11.3 ofEN 270:1994.To be performed before the inward leakage test.5.9 Breathing hose and ventilating hoseThe breathing hose may be fitted internally and/or externally. A ventilating hose may be fitted externally.5.9.1 External breathing hoseIf fitted, the external breathing hose shall be of sufficient flexibility to enable the wearer to carry out the practicalperformance test and it shall permit free head movement.NOTEThe hose should not be of a length which can enable it to be easily caught on obstructions.Connections between the suit and the external breathing hose shall withstand a pull test of 250 N both beforeand after conditioning. EN 943-1:2002 (E)12Test in accordance with 7.7 of EN 270:1994.5.10 Air flow rateThe flowrate and distribution of the air into the chemical protective suit shall not cause distress to the wearer byexcessive local cooling when tested in accordance with 6.2.Two devices shall be tested, one of which has been conditioned.5.10.1 Continuous flow valveA continuous flow valve, when fitted, shall be easily adjusted by the wearer to supply air as required when testedin accordance with 6.2. The continuous flow valve shall not be able to deliver less than the minimum designflowrate specified by the manufacturer.5.11 Warning and measuring facilitiesA means shall be available to check that the manufacturer's minimum design flowrate is exceeded prior to eachuse. The suit shall be fitted with a warning facility that immediately draws the attention of the wearer to the factthat the manufacturer's minimum design flowrate is not being achieved.A means of checking the correct functioning of the warning facility shall also be available.If an audible warning device is fitted it shall comply with the performance requirements of 6.13.3 of EN 270:1994.Test in accordance with 6.1 and 6.2 of this standard; and also 7.12 of EN 270:1994.Two devices shall be tested, one of which has been conditioned.5.12 Compressed air supply tubeThe compressed air supply tube shall comply with 6.11 of EN 270:1994.5.13 Exhaust assemblyType 1a, type 1c and type 2 suits shall be provided with an exhaust assembly which may consist of one or moreexhalation valves. Type 1b suits shall be fitted with an exhaust assembly if the exhalation valve of the respiratoryprotective equipment is not free to discharge directly to atmosphere, or where supplementary air for ventilation issupplied to the chemical protective suit.When tested in accordance with 6.6 the pressure change shall not exceed 100 Pa in 1 min. Three devices shallbe tested, one of which has been conditioned according to 5.2.5.14 Pressure in chemical protective suitWhen tested in accordance with 6.4 the pressure in the suit shall not exceed 400 Pa. Type 1b suits shall only betested when an exhaust assembly is fitted.5.15 Breathing resistanceIf the air is taken directly from the chemical protective suit the breathing resistance shall be according to 6.15.4.2and 6.15.4.3 of EN 270:1994. If the air is supplied to a full facemask the breathing resistance shall be accordingto 6.20 of EN 139:1994.



EN 943-1:2002 (E)135.16 Carbon dioxide content of inhalation airThe carbon dioxide content of the inhalation air shall comply with 6.16 of EN 270:1994.5.17 Noise associated with the air supply to the suitThe noise associated with the air supply shall comply with the requirements of 6.17 of EN 270:1994 when testedat the manufacturer’s maximum design flowrate.6 Test methods6.1 Visual inspectionA visual inspection shall be carried out by the test station prior to laboratory or practical performance tests. Thismay entail a certain amount of dismantling in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance.6.2 Practical performance testAll tests shall be carried out by two test subjects at temperature (20 ± 5) °C, relative humidity < 60 % and the testtemperature and humidity shall be recorded. The background noise shall not be greater than 75 dBA.For the test, persons shall be selected who are familiar with using such or similar equipment and whose medicalhistory is known to be satisfactory. The subjects shall be medically examined and certified fit to undertake thetest procedures. The necessity of a medical examination before, or supervision during the tests shall be at thetesting officers’ discretion.Prior to the test there is an examination that the suit is in good working order and that it can be used withouthazard. If more than one size of suit is manufactured the subjects are asked to select the appropriate size.Two devices shall be tested, each being tested on one subject.After fitting the suit, each test subject is asked "Does the suit fit?"
If the answer is "Yes" continue the test.
If theanswer is "No", take the test subject off the panel and report the fact.6.2.1 Work simulation testDuring this test the following activities shall be done in the simulation of the practical use of the suit, the test shallbe completed within a total working time of 30 min.a)Walking on the level at a regular rate of 6 km/h for 5 min.b)Climbing up and down a ladder (total vertical distance 20 m)c)Filling a small basket (see Figure 1, approximate volume 8 l) with 12 mm chippings (e.g. limestonechippings) or other suitable material from a hopper which stands 1,5 m high and has an opening at thebottom to allow the contents to be shovelled out, and a further opening at the top where the chippings maybe returned. The subject stoops or kneels as he/she wishes and fills the basket with chippings. He/shethen lifts the basket and empties the contents back into the hopper. This is repeated 15 to 20 times in10 min.



EN 943-1:2002 (E)14Figure 1 — Basket and hopper of chippings6.2.2 Information to be recordedDuring the practical performance tests the apparatus shall be subjectively assessed by the wearer and thefollowing shall be recorded:a) harness comfort;b) security of fastenings and couplings;c) accessibility of controls and pressure gauge (if fitted);d) clarity of vision from the facepiece and/or visor;e) clothing comfort;f)ease of speech transmission;g)any other comments volunteered by the wearer.6.3 Measurement of minimum and maximum air flow rateConnect the ends of the distribution system collectively to a suitable measuring device. Record the maximumairflow at the manufacturer's required air supply. If a control valve is fitted record the maximum and minimumdelivered airflow.
