IEC 60335-2-34:2012 deals with the safety of sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic type) motor-compressors, their protection and control systems, if any, which are intended for use in equipment for household and similar purposes and which conform with the standards applicable to such equipment. It applies to motor-compressors tested separately, under the most severe conditions that may be expected to occur in normal use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase motor-compressors and 480 V for other motor-compressors. Examples of equipment which contain motor-compressors are: - refrigerators, food freezers and ice makers (IEC 60335-2-24); - air-conditioners, electric heat pumps and dehumidifiers (IEC 60335-2-40); - commercial dispensing appliances and vending machines (IEC 60335-2-75); - factory-built assemblies for transferring heat in applications for refrigerating, air-conditioning or heating purposes or a combination of such purposes. This standard does not supersede the requirements of standards relevant to the particular appliance in which the motor-compressor is used. However, if the motor-compressor type used complies with this standard, the tests for the motor-compressor specified in the particular appliance standard may not need to be made in the particular appliance or assembly. If the motor-compressor control system is associated with the particular appliance control system, additional tests may be necessary on the final appliance. These appliances may be operated from the mains, from a separate battery or operated either from the mains or from a separate battery. This standard also deals with the safety of ice-cream appliances intended for household use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. It also deals with with compression-type appliances for household and similar use, which use flammable refrigerants. The principal changes in this edition as compared with the previous edition are as follows: - Aligns the text with IEC 60335-1, and its amendments; - clarifies the term 'household and similar use'; - updates marking requirements for supply terminals of battery operated appliances; - introduces requirements for appliances using transcritical refrigerant systems; - introduces an enhanced flexing test; - introduces requirements for accessible glass panels; - clarifies tests for appliances using flammable refrigerants. The attention of national Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselfs for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 12 months or later than 36 months from the date of publication.

Appliances that are within the scope of this standard are: - refrigerated display and storage cabinets; - refrigerated trolley cabinets; - service counters and self-service counters; - blast chillers and blast freezers. This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows: 1.1 Replacement. This standard applies to automatically-controlled refrigerated bulk-milk tanks intended for fixed or mobile installation on farms or at milk collecting points having a rated volume not exceeding 25 000 litres. It also applies to immersion coolers and to equipment delivered as a number of units for assembly into a single appliance. NOTE 1 : Bulk-milk coolers can be combined with heat-recovery units. NOTE 2: This standard does not apply to: - milk coolers incorporated in heating systems; - milk coolers having a pre-cooling system; - instantaneous milk coolers; - refrigerators and food freezers (EN 60335-2-44). NOTE 3: For bulk-milk coolers intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships, additional requirements may be necessary. NOTE 4: Attention is drawn to the fact that in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar authorities.
