Industrial Symbiosis: Core Elements and Implementation Approaches

Industrial symbiosis is the use by one company or sector of underutilised resources broadly defined (including waste, by-products, residues, energy, water, logistics, capacity, expertise, equipment and materials) from another, with the result of keeping resources in productive use for longer. It presents a systems approach to a more sustainable and integrated industrial economy that identifies business opportunities to improve resource utilisation and productivity. The objectives of this CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) are to support the mainstream adoption of good practice approaches proven through implementation by advancing the mutual understanding of actors (public, private, third sector, and community) currently using the term industrial symbiosis in different ways. This CWA is intended to help the above actors consider and implement industrial symbiosis.

Industrijska simbioza je uporaba premalo izkoriščenih virov, ki so široko opredeljeni (vključno z odpadki, stranskimi proizvodi, ostanki, energijo, vodo, logistiko, zmogljivostjo, strokovnim znanjem, opremo in materiali), med posameznimi podjetji ali sektorji za namene ohranjanja dolgotrajne produktivnosti virov. Zajema sistematski pristop k bolj trajnostni in integrirani industrijski ekonomiji, ki prepoznava poslovne priložnosti za izboljšanje izkoriščenosti ter produktivnosti virov. Cilj tega dogovora v okviru delavnice CEN (CWA) je podpreti prevzemanje pristopov dobre prakse, potrjene na podlagi izvajanja, s spodbujanjem medsebojnega razumevanja izvajalcev (javnih, zasebnih, tretjesektorskih in skupnostnih), pri katerih se izraz industrijska simbioza trenutno uporablja na različne načine. Namen tega dogovora je zgoraj navedenim izvajalcev ponuditi pomoč pri obravnavi in izvajanju industrijske simbioze.

ISO 37101:2016 establishes requirements for a management system for
sustainable development in communities, including cities, using a holistic
approach, with a view to ensuring consistency with the sustainable development
policy of communities.
The intended outcomes of a management system for sustainable development in
communities include:
·         managing sustainability and fostering smartness and resilience in
communities, while taking into account the territorial boundaries to which it
applies;
·         improving the contribution of communities to sustainable
development outcomes;
·         assessing the performance of communities in progressing towards
sustainable development outcomes and the level of smartness and of resilience
that they have achieved;
·         fulfilling compliance obligations.
ISO 37101:2016 is intended to help communities become more resilient, smart
and sustainable, through the implementation of strategies, programmes, projects,
plans and services, and demonstrate and communicate their achievements.
ISO 37101:2016 is intended to be implemented by an organization designated by
a community to establish the organizational framework and to provide the
resources necessary to support the management of environmental, economic and
social performance outcomes. A community that chooses to establish the
organizational framework by itself is considered to constitute an organization
as defined in ISO 37101:2016.
ISO 37101:2016 is applicable to communities of all sizes, structures and
types, in developed or developing countries, at local, regional or national
levels, and in defined urban or rural areas, at their respective level of
responsibility.
ISO 37101:2016 can be used in whole or in part to improve the management of
sustainable development in communities. Claims of conformity to ISO 37101:2016,
however, are not acceptable unless all its requirements are incorporated into an
organization's management system for sustainable development in communities and
fulfilled without exclusion.

Sustainable Nanomanufacturing Framework

This document describes and specifies the requirements of a simplified Sustainability Nanomanufacturing Framework (SNF) for sustainability management in Nanomanufacturing Pilot Lines (NPLs), appropriate to their size, management capabilities and sustainability priorities.
The SNF sets up the basic requirements for a screening methodology to quicky assess the sustainability of a NPL. It provides guidance for diagnosis, implementation, and monitoring, to proactively improve nano-sustainability performances in NPLs, considering its sustainability management and results.
The model can be used by NPLs to achieve its intended outcomes in the field of nano-sustainability.
The SNF is intended to be applied to any NPL regardless of its size, type and activities. Similarly, the model could be scaled to manage the sustainability of a manufacturing area/plant that integrates multiple NPLs.
This document can be used in whole or in part to systematically improve the sustainability in NPLs.

In addition, the terminology and characteristics of cool materials will serve as a reference for other applications where the use of cool materials will have a significant contribution to adaptation to climate change as well as quality of life, such as for roads and pavements.
Whilst reflective surfaces can be very beneficial, they are not appropriate or effective in all climates for all buildings or building constructions and some guidance is provided.

The monetary valuation methods in this document can also be used to better understand organizations' dependencies on the environment.
During the planning of the monetary valuation, the intended use of the results is considered but the use itself is outside the scope of this document.
In this document, monetary valuation is a way of expressing value in a common unit, for use in comparisons and trade-offs between different environmental issues and between environmental and other issues. The monetary value to be determined includes some or all values reflected in the concept of total economic value. An anthropocentric perspective is taken, which asserts that natural environment has value in so far as it gives utility (well-being) to humans. The monetary values referred to in this document are economic values applied in trade-offs between alternative resource allocations, and not absolute values.
This document does not include costing or accounting, although some valuation methods have the term "cost" in their name. This document does not include the development of models linking environmental aspects to environmental impacts.
NOTE       In this document, what is valued in monetary terms is either environmental impacts or environmental aspects. When valuing environmental impacts of an organization, it is important that links between environmental aspects and environmental impacts are established.
